Rainbow over Loch Etive

Loch Etive 13/03/2010

It was just after quite a shower of rain that I stopped at Loch Etive to stretch my legs, and I was certainly rewarded with this lovely scene before me.

The Loch stretches for nearly 20 miles from Glen Etive in Glencoe,, to Connel in Argyll and Bute and is famous for the Falls of Lora, where the outlet to the sea is quite narrow and the sheer amount of water creates dramatic white water which is popular with kayakers.

Unusually, there is a colony of around 20 Common seals that are resident in the Loch. Part of the north bank has old Sessile Oak woods and therefore has been designated a Special Area of Conservation.

In the mid 1700’s there was a track that ran alongside the south side of the Loch to Taynuilt, which was the main route across the Highlands, unfortunately I can’t find any reference to the track still exisiting
