Ben Wyvis dominates the skyline of Easter Ross, with it’s highest summit being Glas Leathad Mor, at 3431ft,giving the Ben the status of a Munro.
The climb to the summit is fairly straight forward, initially going through forestry, then into open country, and as you start to climb the zig zag path gets steeper leading the the first summit of An Cabar. The walk to the Highest summit is over moss which makes Ben Wyvis unique in comparison to other Munro’s which are clad in grass or heather.
Ben Wyvis is designated a Special Protection area and a National Nature Reserve. It is home to the Eurasian Dotterel and Ptarmigan, as well as plants such as Cloudberry, which have adapted to the harsh conditions of the mountain.
Traditionally part of Clan Munro lands, the mountain was granted to them on the condition the King received a snowball in Midsummer, a requirement easily fulfilled as some of the Corries contain snow all year round.
I took this shot of Wyvis from Glascarnoch Dam, on August of 2010.
