Glen Affric is without a doubt the most beautiful glen in Scotland. With it’s majestic Ancient Caledonian Pine forests, rivers, lochs and abundance of plant and wildlife, visiting this area is good for the soul.
Endangered species are thriving in Glen Affric with the Black Grouse and Red Squirrel being just two examples. Also the Lochs provide breeding areas for rare dragonflies. Over 100 species of birds have been recorded too, the most notable examples been the Golden Eagle and Osprey.
The Glen itself stretches for 30 miles from Cannich to Kintail in the west and is surrounded by hills and mountains. The walk around the Loch itself is quite long at 10 miles but it is not too strenuous, it is well worth the day out out to take in the dramatic mountain views and the opportunity to imagine a time when bears and wolves roamed the area, and in later times Jacobites hiding in the glens.
Glen Affric has the status of being a Caledonian Forest Reserve, a National Scenic Area and National Nature Reserve.
It was June of 2010 that I walked round the loch and you would think that with all that beauty there would be nothing else to see, but on the drive home just out of Cannich I was lucky enough to see two fox cubs playing by the side of the road, then a Tawny Owl fly into it’s nesting hole in a tree beside the road. I could see it just perched in there, with it’s big eyes just staring back at me.
